In her 1988 Bruges speech, then British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher warned about the dangers of a united Europe led by one centralized power. “To try to suppress nationhood and concentrate power at the center of a European conglomerate would be highly damaging and would jeopardize the objectives we seek to achieve,” she said. Mrs. Thatcher’s fear has become today’s reality.
