One of the groups that pressured Russia’s Soviet system out of existence in the 1980s and 1990s was Memorial, a human rights network challenging repressive agencies like the KGB and its successors. As of April, President Vladimir Putin’s government has extinguished Memorial’s operations in Russia, forcing the group abroad. The Trumpet spoke to Nataliya Sekretareva, the head of Memorial’s legal team, about how Memorial is handling the pressure, Russia’s current direction, and more.
