One of the groups that pressured Russia’s Soviet system out of existence in the 1980s and 1990s was Memorial, a human rights network challenging repressive agencies like the KGB and its successors. As of April, President Vladimir Putin’s government has extinguished Memorial’s operations in Russia, forcing the group abroad.
