- Mass protests are filling the streets of countries all over the world—in Asia, Europe, South America, the Caribbean and the Middle East—from Chile to Spain, Hong Kong to Lebanon—for several different reasons. The Washington Post says that “2019 has become the year of the street protester.” There are fundamental similarities among these disparate protests that enable us to draw some larger lessons.
- California is burning under some of the worst wildfires in the state’s history—the latest in a series of curses in that state. We talk about a little-recognized reason why these disasters are hitting California time and again.
- A state election in Germany saw major victories for both the extreme left and extreme right, and the result jeopardizes Chancellor Angela Merkel’s governing coalition.
